Comment: Common. Collected off 3 plants. Description: Sasparilla vine [local name for Smilax pumila] is an evergreen groundcover to short, clambering vine. Often found in dry to moist, sandy environments. Stems can be slightly woody, erect, few tendrils, woolly pubescent; sparse prickles, mostly towards the base. Leaves alternate, entire, short petiolate; obovate to oblanceolate, slightly quilted texture with 3 prominent veins, glabrous above, densely pubescent below. Flowers [produced in] yellowish-green umbels from axils of upper leaves. Fruit red to orange, slightly oval. [It is] not uncommon to see sasparilla vine flowering with fruit in October. Makes an excellent, nicely textured groundcover for dry to moist areas and under trees where few other plants can deal with the root competition.
