Environment description: Xeric shrub, xeric sandhills community. Very interesting population: Extremely xeric conditions. Many growing in full sun. Elevation: 30 feet. Slope: 10%. Aspect: Southeast.

Comment: Collectors' notes: Fringetree is a small, usually multi-stemmed, deciduous tree; 6-12 feet in height with a rounded habit. Leaves, elliptical, 3-8 inches, opposite, simple, glabrous above and pubescent underside. Flowers fragrant, ivory to white, [in] paniculate clusters on previous year’s growth; April to May. Dioecious, but may also have perfect flowers on each plant. Male flowers are showier than female flowers due to longer petals. Fruit, showy bluish-black “olives” on 1.5-2” peduncles; matures late summer. Fall color, clear yellow. Bark, scaly dark brown ridges and red furrows. Most individuals 4-10 feet tall, multi-stemmed. Some individuals to 12-15 feet. Seed collected off 8 plants.
