Locality: Shawnee National Forest - Stoneface Natural Resource Area located approximately 1.20 miles northeast of Somerset, T10S R7E NE 1/4 SW 1/4 SE 1/4 Sec. 9

Environment description: Edge of sandstone bluff with very little soil deposition
Number of plants sampled: 1
Associated species: Ambrosia artemisifolia, Bidens bipinnata, and Toxicodendron radicans
Comment: Single plant collection resulting in acquisition of eight fruits that yielded fourteen viable (assumption based on visual observation) seeds; twenty-two aborted seeds, and one insect damaged seed. Plant under extreme stress from competition and harsh substrate/environment. Specimen sampled consisting of three stems and numerous larger, dead stems.

Narrative
Accession represents a very disjunct population for Illinois. Originally documented by R.A. Evers on 23 April 1953 (Voucher #36759 (ILLS00033059)). Extremely rare, possibly the last specimen of Aronia in southern Illinois. Likely represents an apomictic tetraploid late blooming Aronia. Fruits black and fully mature by early September (2023) at collection site in southern Illinois. Leaves are dark bronze in color when expanding, eventually turning dark green. Rhizomatous forming.
