Locality: Hokkaido Prefecture: Furano: The Tokyo University Forest in Hokkaido, Yamabe.
Comment: Cultivated. Parent tree originally collected in the wild, brought from forest areas from either Mt. Dairoku (ca 1459 m) or Mt. Ashibetsu (ca 1726 m). [The specific original field collection number/NA accession number for this clone is not known at present, but it would be the same as one of 10 accessions, NA 58856 through 58861 or 58864 through 58867, which all had the same locality data. These had the following "JH" field collection numbers, respectively: JH 31, 32, 37, 43, 44, 45, 54, 55, 60, 63. -SBL] The winter temperature at this site had a ten-year mean coldest mid-winter minimum temperature of -33.8 degrees C, and a ten-year overall mean daily mid-winter minimum temperature of -8.8 degrees C, similar to Minnesota and North Dakota in the U.S.

Narrative
Received as three grafted plants under the name Prunus sargentii 'JFS-KW58' PINK FLAIR. This cultivar originated from seed collected by Roland Jefferson in Hokkaido, Japan in 1986 in a cultivated setting [trees brought from various Hokkaido mountain locations by Japanese scientists to the Tokyo University Forest Experimental Station, Furano, Hokkaido to preserve the germplasm]; seedlings of 10 different accessions were sent by USNA to J. Frank Schmidt & Son (identified initially as Prunus sargentii) for evaluation. It was selected and introduced after proving hardy in zone 3B prairie conditions, in testing at Absaraka, North Dakota by North Dakota State University. The original collection and accession number is unknown, but would have been a member of NA 58856-58861 (PI-510810-510816) or NA 58864-58867 (PI-510818-510821), which all share the same collection site data. It is clear from its morphology that it is actually a hybrid between P. sargentii and P. nipponica, which commonly occurs where the two species are grown together. These plants appear to have been additionally top-worked (grafted) on top of the cultivar's own trunk, above a low-grafted rootstock. -SBL
