Environment description: Beautiful Pine-Oak forest sits atop the Buhrstone Questa, an escarpment that rises over 350 feet. Southern Red Hills Region. Slope: 12%. Aspect: West. Elevation recorded as 308 feet.

Comment: Large, deciduous shrub to small tree, 12 to 20 feet tall; single to mostly multi-trunked, vase-shaped, with an irregular, round crown. Bark smooth, light brown, gray blotchy. Twigs slender, zig-zig, and pubescent when young, turning glabrous with age. Leaves, non-equilateral, wavy margined, dark green above and paler below, alternate, ovate to obovate, toothed, base oblique; leaf buds pubescent. Dull to bright gold yellow fall color. Flowers yellow, spider-like, less than 1 inch, with 4 crinkly, ribbon-shaped, slender petals. Flowers appear along the branches, in leaf axils, from October to December. Fruit a semi woody capsule, explosively dehiscent; seed ripening August-September. Quite common. Seed collected off of one heavily-fruited plant.
