Environment description: Nice remnant savannah, native grasses with intact woody mottes. Incomplete residential development, but building appears to be commencing again. Slope: 2%. Aspect: Southwest. Elevation recorded as 699 feet.

Associated species: Toxicodendron pubescens [listed as Rhus toxicodendron]; Quercus buckleyi; Quercus fusiformis; Rhus aromatica; Smilax bona-nox; Ulmus crassifolia; Yucca pallida; Rhus lanceolata; Baccharis neglecta.
Comment: Irregular, deciduous shrub, 4-6 feet tall by 4-8 feet wide, sometimes forming thickets. Branches upright arching, twigs opposite or nearly opposite at 90 degree angle. Often the first to bloom in (January-) early February to March; clusters of greenish yellow flowers, apetalous, borne in leaf axils on bare twigs. Dioecious. Fruit bluish-black drupes in clusters, mature slowly, May. Wonderful bright golden yellow fall color. Scattered distribution, but dominant component of understory. Fruit collected from four individuals.
