Narrative
Full name as recorded at U.S. National Arboretum: Rhus typhina 'Irvin's Chartreuse'. Full background provided by originator Sam Bahr (pers. comm.) and recorded in the name record; raised from open-pollinated seed of 'Bailtiger' (TIGER EYES) in 2014 and named for Irvin Etienne, a friend of the originator who works at Newfields (formerly the Indianapolis Museum of Art). Its foliage is undivided, unlike that of the seed parent, and the color fades to green on mature leaves. Both male and female flowers appear to be produced in the same panicle, although the species is normally dioecious. The cultivar also seems to be more tolerant of poor soil and heat than the seed parent. Form received: rooted cutting.
