Narrative
Unaccessioned at Morris Arboretum (recorded with greenhouse number 2013x101); from cuttings of a single seed-raised plant, MA 1993-048*B, which was raised from seed received from the U.S. National Arboretum. Morris Arboretum recorded that the material was collected directly from the wild in China, but that no other information was available per Ned Garvey, other than the collection date of 15 Sep. 1992. Since Morris Arboretum received the seed on 8 Mar. 1993, and NA 63550 was accessioned one day after Morris Arboretum received its seed from USNA, it is clearly from NA 63550 (this would also have been the only wild-collected T. chinensis seed at USNA at the time). The record of NA 63550 includes the following note: Accession sheet note: "Obtained from Lowrey Nursery, TX, which somehow purchased wild collected from native stands in P.R.C." See also NA 86874, 86906, 86907, 86908, and 86909 for additional propagations of the same seedling; NA 86875 rooted cuttings of MA 1993-048*I, another seedling individual of the same accession. From the record of the original lineage accession, NA 63550: Accession sheet note: "Obtained from Lowrey Nursery, TX, which somehow purchased wild collected [seed] from native stands in P.R.C." [The wild collection date was not included with this accession, but was apparently transmitted to Morris Arboretum, which received seeds from USNA on March 8, 1993.] The number "93111" was recorded with this accession in GRIN, and suggests the possibility that seed was item number 111 of a 1993 Index Seminum offering by some Chinese source. See NA 86874 and 86875 for rooted cuttings of two seed-grown trees at Morris Arboretum that appear to have originated from NA 63550 seed that was distributed to MA and accessioned there as MA 1993-048, plus NA 86905-86909, and NA 87544 for rooted cuttings of a single individual (same source seedling as NA 86874). Additionally, NA 68327, received as a seedling from Trees on the Move in 1996, is presumed to have the same origins. -SBL
