Narrative
Full name as recorded at U.S. National Arboretum: Clethra alnifolia (pink selection). Single plant of uncertain identity and origin growing in bed FV-R6 at time of accessioning, not far from the boundary of FV-02 (near a Corylus americana). Plant with good, non-fading light/medium pink petals, rather large individual florets; seems to be distinct from other named pink clones at the Arboretum at time of accessioning. Could be old NA 33019, received as C. alnifolia f. rosea from Princeton Nurseries, but that is a very uncertain possibility and plant does not match modern references to 'Rosea' as it is a much better pink. Joan recalls that the plant was there when she started and that she believes it used to have a label indicating that it was a pink form. Of possible interest in the search for material of the original USNA introduction 'Pinkspire', but any connection to that cultivar is highly speculative and doubtful at this point. -SBL Form received: unknown propagule type.
