Narrative
Full name as recorded at U.S. National Arboretum: Magnolia grandiflora. This plant, growing in the Friendship Garden behind Arbor House, was previously thought to be a hybrid and was recorded as NA 7717*HHJ. Richard Olsen tested this plant using flow cytometry and discovered that it is actually hexaploid and therefore pure M. grandiflora, which confirms earlier suspicions since the plant produces a full crop of fruit in contrast to the hybrids. -SBL Form received: unknown propagule type.
