Narrative
Full name as recorded at U.S. National Arboretum: Shortia galacifolia. Collected at Great Fields camp site in Devil's Fork State Park off Route 178 on Horse Pasture Road, near Fork Mountain, along creek. Nearby and adjacent herbaceous plants abundant. Found along creek from edges out up 15' from sloped banks. NY and hay-scented ferns (Dennstaedtia punctilobula and Thelypteris novaboracensis), Mitchella repens, Goodyera pubescens, Viola hastata, Viola rotundifolia, Medeola virginiana; woodies scattered, including Rhododendron minus, Leucothoe fontanesiana, Kalmia & Vaccinium sp. Overhead Acer rubrum with other canopy species - all deciduous.
