Narrative
The selection program that resulted in the development of AlfPers_2015 alfalfa was initiated in 2013. Seventeen alfalfa plants of the variety Florida 99 were used for the first intercrossing. The initial Florida 99 stand was overseeded over bahiagrass (Paspalum notatum Flugge), and the original field was managed as a hay field throughout the growing seasons for four years. The seventeen plants were selected mainly for persistence in the field, with good dry mass accumulation and field disease/pest resistance. The original 17 plants were uprooted and brought to Gainesville, FL, where they were intercrossed in isolation in the spring 2014, where no other alfalfa plants were present in a ratio of 20 miles. The seed of this intercross was used to establish the first variety trial. A year after planting this first trial, remnant seed for the original polocrosse was sent for seed increases in the Fall 2015 to Caldwell, Idaho, and 2,000 g of cleaned breeder seed was obtained from this original breeder seed increase. A second cage increase was performed in 2018 with the same grower using, and final field seed increase was conducted in 2020 to obtain approximately 250 kg of breeder seed
