Description:
L 14-267 was derived from a cross, XL09-266 made in 2009 by scientists at the LSU AgCenter. The female parent HoCP 05-918, contains the lineages of two Saccharum spontaneous clones, SES 6 from India and US 56-15-8 from Thailand. The male parent, ‘L 01-283’, is a cultivar with declining acreage in the Louisiana sugar industry. The acreage is declining because the cultivar has a propensity to produce ‘off type’ phenotypes which have negatively affected its yield potential. L 01-283 also has S. spontaneous lineage (US 56-15-8 from Thailand) in its background. Saccharum spontaneum is the wild relative of the previously cultivated, sugar producing species, S. officinarum. Cultivated sugarcane are inter-specific hybrids derived by crossing (and backcrossing to S. officinarum) between these two species. For several decades, new cultivars were bred by crossing and selecting among these inter-specific hybrids. Recent breeding efforts in Louisiana have focused on a new round of introgression by crossing among cultivars and S. spontaneum. The new cultivar, L 14-267, is the combination of this effort.
