Environment description: Collection Locality - Wild Chile Botanical Area. County - Santa Cruz. Biotic Community - Semidesert Grassland/Shrubland. Habitat Description - In semi-desert grassland/shribland ecotone into Madrean oak woodland, but with unique species composition. The subpopulation in the side canyon is in a more protected, moist, and lush pocket. Plants are found in steep canyon bottoms and rocky South-facing slopes above drainages almst always at the base of the Celtis reticulata tree (sometimes mesquite or kidneywood). Very rugged terrain with loose rocks. Probably some grazing. Watershed - Upper Santa Cruz. Population Size - 50. Aspect Direction - South. Directions to Collection Locality - Take Santa Gertrudis road into CNF land in the Tumacacori highlands, after the gas line road intersection, take the left road at the fork, to drive into Rock Corral Canyon. Drive past campground to pull out on the right. Population starts across the drainage to the right, on the rocky South-facing slope above the canyon. Densest sub-population is in bottoms of side canyons and drainages that extend Northwest off of the main canyon that the road follows.
