Narrative
In the final testing stage, data were collected from 68 replicated trials at 12 diverse locations in the Louisiana sugar industry. Averaged across all plant, first and second ratoon, cane crops, L 11-183 produced 4% less cane yield (tons of cane per acre) than the leading variety in the Louisiana sugar industry, but sucrose content (pounds of sugar per ton of cane) was comparable between the two varieties. Sugar yield, the product of cane yield and sucrose content, was 4% less in L 11-183 compared with the leading variety. L 11-183 can be classified as a medium to late maturing variety compared with other cultivars in the industry. Compared with other cultivars in the industry, L 11-183 exhibits a moderate level of juice deterioration following freezing temperatures. L 11-183 is resistant to smut (Sporisorium scitamineum), moderately resistant to leaf scald (Xanthomonas albilineans), sugarcane yellow leaf virus and ratoon stunting disease (Leifsonia xyli subsp. xyli), and moderately susceptible to brown rust (Puccinia melanocephala) and mosaic (Sorghum mosaic virus). L 11-183 is susceptible to the sugarcane borer (Diatraea saccharalis). Field observations indicate that the variety is attractive to yellow sugarcane aphids. Field observations also indicate that L 11-183 is not any more susceptible to herbicides commonly used for weed control in sugarcane than other sugarcane varieties currently in production.

Description:
L 11-183 was derived from a cross made at LSU AgCenter's, Sugar Research Station in St. Gabriel, LA in 2006. The female parent, HoCP 92-624, reached the final testing stage of selection but was dropped because of its propensity to lodge. The male parent, LCP 85-384, is a backcross four progeny of a wild relative of sugarcane S. spontaneum. LCP 85-384 was once the leading cultivar in the state grown on 90% of the acreage in 2004 before it succumbed to brown rust caused by Puccinia melanocepha.
