Narrative
Sugarcane cultivar CP 13-1223 represents a variety with superior performance on muck soils. Its higher stalk weight results in high biomass yields over several crop cycles. This high tonnage, combined with acceptable sucrose content, results in significant improvement in profitability. This variety tests positive for the Bru1 locus, which confers moderately resistance to brown rust (Puccinia melanocephala H. & P. Sydow). In addition, CP 13-1223 is resistant to leaf scald (caused by Xanthomonas albilineans Ashby, Dowson), ratoon stunt (caused by Leifsonia xyli subsp. xyli Davis), Sugarcane mosaic virus strain E (mosaic), smut (Sporisorium scitamineum (Syd.) Piepenbring et al.), and orange rust (Puccinia kuehnii E.J. Butler). CP 13-1223 also has moderate freeze tolerance. This variety is recommended for organic (muck) soils in Florida.

Pedigree
Description:
CP 13-1223 originated from a cross CP 02-2281 × Poly 09-25 made in 18 December 2009. The female parent, CP 02-2281, was the CP sugarcane breeding line derived from the cross CP 94-1200 × CP 92-1167 and one of the fore parent (SP 70-1143) originated from the Copersucar breeding program in Brazil. The designation of the male ‘parent’, Poly 09-25, indicates it was the 25th poly-cross made during the 2009 crossing season and particular male parent is unknown.
