Narrative
SC14_072, selected for kernel length (7.91 mm), is classified as an extra-long grain and captures much of the kernel length of Estrela (8.24 mm) with low amylose content and high gelatinization temperature based on genetic marker alleles The plant is pubescent, average days to 50% heading is 74 d, plant height is 119 cm, and it has the Pi-z and Pi-ks genes for resistance to rice blast disease (Magnaporthea oryzae). SC14_072 has the same SNP alleles for grain length as Estrela near the candidate genes LONG KERNEL 3 (GRAIN SIZE 3) [LK3 (GS3)] and GRAIN LENGTH 3.2 (GL3.2) on chromosome 3, GRAIN LENGTH 7 (GL7) on chromosome 7 and GRAIN WIDTH 8 (GW8) on chromosome 8. The fact that SC14_072 has a shorter grain than Estrela may be attributed to the same SNP alleles for grain width as NSFTV199 near candidate genes SMALL AND ROUND SEED 3 (SRS3) and GRAIN WIDTH 5 (GW5) on chromosome 5. Its grain length:width ratio is 3.00 and it has 4.64 percent grain chalkiness.
