Environment description: Cliff edges and steep slopes above the Maquoketa River, including the ridge known as the "Backbone".
Number of plants sampled: 3
Associated species: Quercus alba, Quercus rubra, Carpinus caroliniana, Ostrya virginiana, Tilia americana, Acer saccharum, Staphylea trifolia, Taxus canadensis, Zanthoxylum americanum, and Amelanchier arborea
Comment: Sampled three widely spaced specimens with the greatest distance between two specimens measuring 1.60 miles and the shortest distance between two samples measuring 0.47 miles. Numerous specimens of Dirca palustris noted near specimen 948-2. Coordinates for all mother tree samples may be provided upon request.
