Description:
Originated from a cross of ‘PMR 45’ with melon aphid (Aphis gossypii) resistant parent 90234, a self-pollinated derivative of PI 371795 (McCreight). ‘PMR 5’ was used as the backcross parent for nine of the 12 backcrosses. AR 5 closely resembles ‘PMR 5’. It exhibits high-level resistance to melon aphid and powdery mildew incited by Podosphaera xanthi (= S. fuliginea) races 1 and 2. The released line was from a mass increase of 13 bulked F4, F5, and F6 progenies from the 12th backcross generation. The deposited seed was derived from two successive bulked, sib-pollinated increases of the material released in 1984. Resistance to P. xanthi races 1 and 2 was derived from ‘PMR 5’, though it should be noted PI 414723, which was derived from PI 371795 (McCreight et al., 1992), is also resistant to P. xanthi races 1 and 2F (McCreight, 2006).
Selection for freedom from crown blight , quality, field performance, and PMR 5-type was done in field plantings at Brawley, CA. AR 5 closely resembles ‘PMR 5’ (Whitaker et al., 1943). The fruit are round, with a medium-size, round net on the ribs, and net-free vein tracts (Davis, 1970). The flesh is thick, salmon-orange in color, fine-textured with excellent flavor, and is moderately firm at full-slip. Soluble solids ranged between 9 % and 16 %. The seed cavity is small and dry.
