Environment description: RIch herbaceous understory packed on edge of low, wet site; growing over Devonian shale (Ohio shale).

Comment: Shrub; height 5 to 6 ft; bark olive-brown to gray, with spotted lenticels; leaves elliptic to ovate (base cuneate, apex rounded to acuminate); margins ciliate; abaxially glabrous to densely pubescent and pale green, adaxially glabrous except few hairs along midrib and glossy green; 9 cm by 5 cm; flowers not present; oblong drupe, red, ca 10 mm.
