Environment description: Mesic forest fed by natural springs and with many small (and old) canals diverting water; large Cryptomeria and Acer pycnanthum comprising much of the canopy; rich understory below. Soil organic and humusy over brown loam.

Comment: Large trees, broadly vase-shaped, generally branching at 3 m in height; height 20 m, DBH 64 cm. Bark gray-brown and flaky, peeling in long strips, much like Acer saccharinum. Leaf blades ovate, 5-7 cm in length, mostly 3-lobed with central lobe being longer, serrate margins, quite glaucous abaxially, borne on long (5 cm) reddish petioles. Samaras 2-3 cm in length, pinkish-tan, borne on long (7-8 cm) peduncles; a few still on two trees, most dispersed.
