Environment description: Edge of ridgeline below rather open canopy of Quercus serrata and Fagus japonica. Soil consists of duff layer above gravelly clay; light in color.

Comment: Small trees/large shrubs, multi-stemmed. Height 6 m, DBH 3 cm. Bark smooth, gray. Leaves ovate, 5 cm long by 3 cm wide; broadly acumate apex and cuneate base; margins ciliate. Fruits are smooth green capsules to 15 mm long and 8 mm wide, borne on stalks to 15 mm long.
