Environment description: Edge of ridgeline below rather open canopy of Quercus serrata and Fagus japonica. Soil consists of duff layer above gravelly clay; light in color.

Comment: Upright multi-stemmed shrub, with somewhat spreading horizontal branches at top. Height 3.5 m, DBH 1.5 cm. Bark smooth, gray. Leaves broadly ovate, 5 cm long and 4 cm wide, borne in clusters of three. Fruits are small, curved capsules to 10 mm long, wider at the base and ridged.
