Environment description: Mesic forest dominated by Pinus densiflora, Tsuga sieboldii, and occasional deciduous trees; top of north-south ridge above a hinoki (Chamaecyparis obtusa) plantation; south edge of collecting site with a large canopy gap. Soil A horizon light tan, clayey; lots of organic matter.

Comment: Small multi-stemmed tree/large shrub; dense branching and foliage. Height to 7 m, DBH to 9 cm. Bark light gray, smooth with warty texture. Leaves light green (sickly in color), ovate, to 8 cm long. Bright red fruits, oblong (to 8 mm long and 6 mm wide), borne on reddish stalks 1 cm long.
