Environment description: Mesic forest dominated by Pinus densiflora, Tsuga sieboldii, and occasional deciduous trees; top of north-south ridge above a hinoki (Chamaecyparis obtusa) plantation; south edge of collecting site with a large canopy gap. Soil A horizon light tan, clayey; lots of organic matter.

Comment: Multi-stemmed small tree, vase-shaped, open habit; leaning over slope, towards canopy gaps. Height to 8 m, DBH to 6 cm. Bark with tight furrows/strips, vertical, slightly twisted; young stems reddish. Leaves ovate, to 8 cm long and 4 cm wide, with undulate margins, glossy on adaxial side. Fruits are round green capsules on 3 cm stalks.
