Environment description: Mesic forest dominated by Pinus densiflora, Tsuga sieboldii, and occasional deciduous trees; top of north-south ridge above a hinoki (Chamaecyparis obtusa) plantation; south edge of collecting site with a large canopy gap. Soil A horizon light tan, clayey; lots of organic matter.

Comment: Multi-stemmed small tree, common in the understory and mid-canopy level; some up to 10 m(!) m in height, most 6 to 7 m; DBH to 10 cm. Gorgeous gray bark, flaking to reveal reddish-orange. Coarse-textured foliage; leaves ovate to obovate, up to 14 cm long and 8 cm wide, abaxially pubescent, on veins in particular. Fruits are yellow-green capsules borne on stalks up to 1 cm; infructescences to 15 cm.
