Environment description: Early successional woods on edge of trail, covered with lots of Artemisia vulgaris and terrestrial leeches. Soil gravelly, with some organic layer A-horizon.

Aspect:
Comment: Dense shrubs; height 1.5 to 2 m, widest stem DBH 3 cm. Bark of young stems light brown with slight flakiness; older stems very flaky and gray/brown. Leaves lanceolate, very large, 9.5 cm by 2.5 cm; serrulate; dark green, very rough on adaxial side, lighter green abaxially; petioles 7 mm. Seed capsules green, 4 mm x 5 mm, borne on stalks up to 1 cm.
