Environment description: Hillside at edge of a spring in a dense copse that had been cleared at the time Wilson visited 100 yrs ago, now regrown. Soil gravelly, but also with an orange, clayey mineral soil; organic much [muck?].

Associated species: Acer davidii; Pterocarya macroptera; Hydrangea bretschneideri; Buddleja sp.; Meliosma sp.; Viburnum erubescens
Comment: Massive tree, hollowed out, adjacent another large stem. Height 22 m, DBH 200 cm (estimated). Bark gray-brown with large furrows. Leaves on short-shoot spurs, 8 cm long and 10 cm wide, green but starting to turn yellow; few juvenile long shoots found. Fruit: green follicles, 1.75 cm long, curved. Slope: 30 degrees. Aspect: West. Likely that the entire complex of stems was a resprout from centuries ago. Stems were coppiced at about 5 meters in 1910. Same tree Wilson photographed 17 August 1910 with three men; EHW #4301, type for Cercidiphyllum japonicum var. sinense. Seed collected from one plant. Four herbarium specimens collected; photographed.
