‘ND Crown’, a large-seeded Kabuli chickpea was developed by the pulse crops breeding program at North Dakota State University and approved for release by the North Dakota Agricultural Experiment Station. ND Crown, the first chickpea cultivar from the program, was selected specifically for adaptation to North Dakota growing conditions on the basis of its high yield potential, early maturity, large seed size, and moderate resistance to Ascochyta blight. Based on 21 environments (location-year) of yield trials cross North Dakota and Montana, ND Dawn had an average yield (2152 kg ha-1). ND Crown reached 50% flowering in approximately 56 days, which is 2 days earlier than CDC Frontier and CDC Orion. ND Crown matures for harvest in approximately 98 days after planting, which was similar with CDC Frontier and Sierra. Although ND Crown has greater canopy height than CDC Frontier and CDC Orion by 4 and 5 cm, respectively, it has good plant standability and is resistant to lodging (score=2). ND Crown (407 g) has greater 1000 seed weight than CDC Frontier (344 g) but lesser than Sierra (443 g).The 1000 seed weight of ND Crown is not significantly different from CDC Orion (419 g). Similarly, ND Crown (73.5%) has a greater percentage of >8mm seeds than CDC Frontier (64.8 %) but lesser than Sierra (79.0%) and virtually similar amount of >8mm seeds to CDC Orion (74.1%). ND Crown is moderately resistant to Ascochyta blight, with similar reaction as CDC Frontier and CDC Orion under moderate disease pressure. Under high disease pressure, ND Crown displayed significantly lower Ascochyta blight severity when compared to CDC Frontier and CDC Orion. ND Crown exhibits an upright indeterminate growth habit and is resistant to lodging.

Description:
‘ND Crown’, was developed through the pedigree breeding method. Its selection number, X99C2-2314-3, originated as an F6 selection from progeny of the cross X99C2, Stepnoy 1/Obraztsov Chiflik, in 1999. Both parents are elite cultivars in Bulgaria with good agronomic, seed quality and disease resistance characteristics. The cross (X99C2) that was used to develop ND Crown was made in the field at Dobroudja Agricultural Research Institute - near General Toshevo, Bulgaria in 1999.
