Associated species: Carpinus caroliniana, Tilia americana, Acer saccharum, Quercus rubra, Quercus alba, Ostrya virginiana, and Ulmus sp.
Comment: During collection 20 August (2020) majority of the specimens noted (SE 1/4 Sec. 7) had fully opened cones while a small porportion of specimens still had rather green, tight cones. Peak maturity likely occurred around 15 August (2020) at the collection site in nature. Cone production in 2020 was variable and slightly below average.

Narrative
The native range of Pinus strobus is concentrated in the northeastern United States extending south into the northern edge of Georgia and west to central Minnesota. In Iowa, there are scattered populations in a few northeastern counties and also a very small disjunct population in central Iowa (Hardin County, Ames 32758) and also in southeastern Iowa (Muscatine County, Ames 35635). This accession represents genetics from northesastern Iowa in White Pine Hollow (WPH) in Dubuque County and is known to harbor the largest stand of white pine in Iowa dating back to the 1870's. WPH was the first woodland in Iowa to be dedicated (1967) as a state preserve and was previously known to contain Iowa's oldest white oak with a core date estimated back to the year 1580 (Duvick and Blasing 1983). WPH is home to the largest native specimen of Pinus strobus measuring 11’1.5” circumference, 142’ tall, and 44’ spread for a total of 286.3 points (Rouw, M., personal communication, 21 September 2020). “In an assessment of 92 of the largest white pines (native and cultivated) across Iowa, 68 occur in WPH. Out of 40 that exceed a height of 130', 38 are found in WPH with seven of those exceeding 140' and two surpassing 147' (Rouw, M., personal communication, 18 September 2020). The site is also the location of height records (Iowa) for several tree species including Ulmus americana 108', Tilia americana 105.5', Acer saccharum 109', Quercus alba 107', and Carya ovata 109’ (Rouw, M., personal communication, 18 September 2020). P. strobus in WPH is the dominant overstory species specifically in areas next to ravines/valleys and some immediately adjacent uplands. P. strobus from this site represents the extreme western edge of the species native range. Genetics may likely be adapted/tolerant to drought and also late winter/early spring extreme temperature fluctuations. Accession was collected both as seeds (2020) and as scions (2021).
