Environment description: Roadside restoration. Locallized in wetter soils/drainage.
Number of plants sampled: 125
Associated species: Asclepias tuberosa, Baptisia alba, Zizia aurea, Silphium lacinatum, Amorpha canescens, Phlox pilosa subsp. fulgida, Scripus sp., Carex sp., Tradescantia sp., Salix exigua, Juniperus virginiana, Vitis riparia, and Echinacea pallida.
Comment: Genetics collected off roadside restoration are of known wild genetics. Material originally collected by Jimmie D. Thompson from remnant specimens located along the Praeri Rail Trail near McCallsburg (Story County, Iowa) (42.166276, -93.424698) from two, small, widely scattered (e.g. 1.0 mile apart) populations. Population sampled of 150th Street was localized and estimated at approximately 250-350 plants.

Narrative
Phlox maculata is rather rare in central Iowa, more common to northeastern parts of the state. This accession sampled in nature had purple-pink flowers on plants measuring circa 2-2.5’ in height with glabrous stems. Panicles measuring approximately 4-5” in length and 2” wide. Peak flowering and fruiting occurred 25 June and 18 July, respectively in central Iowa (2020).
