Description:
PI 636182, 'Don Armando' (from Univ. Nacional de La Pampa, Argentina), RRC1386 x PI 525498, MT-5 (from Montana State U.). After this cross, single-head progeny rows for three field seasons before finding types to work with further, then started working to grow those selections out and purify the lines over several years to get rid of segregating off types. Dr. Myers still observes a few off type plants each year (even with careful rouging and no weedy amaranths in the surrounding meadow), but in the last few years 99% of the plants have been true to type.
