Description:
Goliath LJ traces to a single plant selection in the F5 generation in 2010 from the cross: SC98-1850 x SC01-783RR. SC98-1850 was developed from the cross F91-1419 x ‘Manokin’. Manokin was derived from the cross combination of L70L-3048 x D74-7824. F91-1419 was derived from a cross between PI 417479 x F87-4017. The source of the LJ trait in F87-4017 traces back to D77-12480, developed from a cross with PI 159925, the original source of the LJ trait identified by Hartwig and Kiihl (1979). SC01-783RR originated from a cross between ‘Musen’ (PI 599333) and a Monsanto RR1 donor line. Musen was developed from a cross combination between ‘Hutcheson’ (PI 518664) x ‘Leflore’ (PI 548981). The initial cross (SC98-1850 x SC01-783RR) was made in the summer of 2008 at Clemson, South Carolina. The F1 seed was then sent to a winter nursery in Puerto Rico for planting in the winter of 2008. The F2 to F4 generations were advanced by the pod-bulk method in South Carolina and Puerto Rico from 2009 to 2010. Single plants were selected in the F5 generation in South Carolina and then sent to a winter nursery in Puerto Rico the fall of 2010 for seed increase. Preliminary yield trials were initiated in 2011, using breeding line designation SC10-261RR. Beginning with the F2 generation plants received glyphosate applications throughout development for evaluation of resistance to glyphosate.
