Comment: The landrace is kept in cultivation by one farmer, Jeff Swann, who lives in northern White County, TN. He secured the seed in 2008 from a neighbor in his 90s, shortly before that farmer's death.

Narrative
Looney corn is named after Charles S. Looney of Winchester, Franklin County, who began exhibiting his white kerneled, white cobbed corn in the 1900s. The judges at the Tennessee State Fair declared it was "damn handsome corn." He won prizes in the 1911 Fair and shortly thereafter Looney became the favorite corn of farmers in southeastern Tennessee and north Alabama: regular, thick-cored, deeply-set and uniform in configuration. It was a short-stature variety that rarely blew down in storms or suffered water damage since the husks were tight and ripe ears bowed down on the stalk. Its most remakrable attribute is that it is a white dent corn that was repeatedly commended for flavor, aside from its other virtues as a field crop. 10" long ears, 16-18 kernel rows per ear. Down-turned ears are well-covered by husk. Long compact grains that fill the cob tightly. White Cob. Many spur (aerial?) roots.
