Narrative
First generation hybrid arising from Quercus prinoides (Ames 23752) x Quercus macrocarpa (OP). Multi-stemmed shrub-like growth habit characteristic of Q. prinoides with acorns with some fringe-like protuberances on the cup characteristic of Q. macrocarpa. Leaves intermediate in size between typical Q. macrocarpa and Q. prinoides, while overall leaf morphology is more characteristic of Q. macrocarpa. After five years of growth in the field in central Iowa, specimen measured 6' in height and 7' in width. The exact paternal identity is unknown. Maternal genetics are Ames 23752, originally collected in Richardson County Nebraska (T1N R15E NW 1/4 NW 1/4 Sec. 21) in 2006 by Jeffrey D. Carstens (USDA-ARS, NCRPIS) and Bob Henrickson (Nebraska Statewide Arboretum). Seedlings from the original 2006 collection were planted at Ames, Iowa at the North Central Regional Plant Introduction Station (NCRPIS) with acorns harvested in 2014. A total of 100 seedlings from the 2014 harvest were planted to the field in 2015. In 2019, one specimen was identified as a hybrid. Quercus × beckyae Gaynor (Q. macrocarpa Michx. × Q. prinoides Willd.) was originally described by Bruce D. Gaynor and named after Rebecca J. Hale (Gaynor 1987). The holotype for Q. × beckyae is held at MICH (Gaynor 81B21). Currently (J.D. Carstens, personal communication, 2 January 2020), no other clones of this hybrid combination exist in cultivation. This accession may be well suited for the home landscape due to its small stature and ability to tolerate a wide range of soil types.
