Narrative
HA 489 is a banded sunflower moth resistant, imidazolinone tolerant, high oleic F8-derived F10 maintainer oilseed sunflower germplasm. Banded sunflower moth resistance was evaluated in the field near Mapleton, ND, in 2011; and Casselton, ND, in 2013 and 2014. Plots were planted to synchronize with peak or near peak flights of banded sunflower moth, which naturally occur in consistent populations in this area. No insect management was employed. Plants were harvested individually and assessed for damage by manual evaluation or by digital X-rays. The best linear unbiased estimates of percent damage for HA 489 per se was 3.8, compared to 9.5 for HA 466, 10.6 for RHA 377, and 8.0 for PI 372259. While there was significant genotype-by-environment interaction, HA 489 was consistently the best performing numerically in each year of evaluation, compared to 18 other released maintainer and restorer lines. Further, a testcross of HA 489 with RHA 377 was evaluated in 2011 and compared to three USDA and two commercial hybrids. The testcross was the highest performing numerically, with 5.2 percent damage, compared to 6.2 for Mycogen 8H449CLDM, 9.0 for Pannar 7813NS, 9.5 for Hybrid HA 412HO/RHA 377, 14.8 for Hybrid HA 445/RHA 377, and 23.9 for Hybrid 894. Overall, the results show that HA 489 has superior resistance to banded sunflower moth that is transmissible to the hybrid.
