Narrative
CP 10-1716 was released for sand soils on June 7, 2018.The parentage is CP 00-2180 x Mix 07Q and CP 10-1716 has a fiber of 11.02. CP 10-1716 ranges from a moderate height to tall with small to medium barrels. CP 10-1716 was rated as resistant to RSD, brown and orange rust, mosaic, smut, leaf scald, and yellow leaf disease on sand soils. It was rated moderately resistant to RSD. CP 10-1716 does have the Bru1 gene that is one of the indicators for brown rust resistance. CP 10-1716 had the best disease rating of the three CP 10 series varieties released for sand. The three-year production summary showed that the commercial recoverable sugar (CRS) for CP 10-1716 at 243.3 lbs/ton was significantly lower than the mean of the checks at 252.6 lbs/ton. Early CRS is measured only once in plant cane and the early CRS for CP 10-1716 and the mean of the checks, respectively, was 220.1 lbs/ton vs. 222.3 lbs/ton. The early CRS for CP 10-1716 was not significantly different than the mean of the checks. The tons of cane per acre (TCA) for CP 10-1716 at 51.68 tons/acre were not significantly different than the mean of the checks at 48.18 tons/acre. The pounds of sugar/acre for CP 10-1716 were not significantly different at 12,609 lbs/acre than the mean of the checks at 12,196 lbs/acre. The economic index ratio for CP 10-1716 vs. the mean of the checks was $1,008/acre vs. $990/acre, respectively, with CP 10-1716 showing no significant difference from the mean of the checks. Height, tillering, and shading is usually similar to the sand check, CL 88-4730, in first and second stubble cane but CP 10-1716 averaged better than the check for these factors in plant cane. CP 10-1716 may be moderately to highly recumbent as early as November. Leaf issues include light to moderate Ring Spot, light lace bug levels, and light rust mite levels. CP 10-1716 does not usually flower. CP 10-1716 had moderate to low freeze tolerance in terms of sugar degradation.
