Narrative
The mean stalk height (ground level to top visible dewlap) of 10 stalks of CP 09-1385 was 288 cm. The mean intemode length of 10 CP 09-1385 stalks at the fifth internode from the ground was 19.2 cm. Stalk diameter was measured at the middle of the second (30.0 mm), fifth (27.2 mm), and tenth (24.9 mm) intemodes from the ground. CP 09-1385 exhibited a cylindrical shaped intemode and a growth ring with a mean width of 3.12 mm at the fifth intemode from the ground. The root band of CP 09-1385 was 7. 77 mm wide. The buds of CP 09-1385 were round with central germ pore. The bud length and width means of the fifth bud from the bottom from five stalks of CP 09-1385 were 6.13 and 5.07 mm, respectively. Leaf sheath pubescence was light down center and usually top half of sheath. CP 09-1385 is resistant to brown rust (caused by Puccinia melanocephala H. & P. Sydow), and Sugarcane mosaic virus strain E (mosaic). This new variety is moderately resistant to orange rust (caused by Puccinia kuehnii E.J. Butler), smut (caused by Ustilago scitaminea (Sydow & P. Sydow), and sugarcane yellow leaf virus. CP 09-1385 is moderately susceptible to ratoon stunt (caused by Leifsonia xyli subsp. xyli Evtsuhenko et al.), and susceptible to leaf scald (caused by Xanthomonas albilineans Ashby, Dowson) In addition, CP 09-1385 tested positive for the presence of the Bru1 gene which confers resistance to brown rust.

Parents of CP 09-1385 were the CP lines CP 01-2459 (female) and CP 00-2188 (male). Grandparents on the female side were US 95-1023 and CP 85-1308, and on male side was a self-cross of cultivar CP 90-1549. Great grandparents on female side were US 94-1054, CP 85-1382, R 597, and CP 74-13. Great-grandparents on male side were CP 82-1592, and CP 84-1322. The maternal male grandparent CP 85-1308, and the paternal female great-grandparent CP 82-1592, were commercial varieties in Florida.
