Narrative
TARS-LH1 showed resistance to E. kraemeri in the Michigan field trials and to E. fabae in field trials conducted in Puerto Rico and Haiti. LC, LB and HB scores for TARS-LH1 were below the mean in all trials and superior to the recurrent parent ‘Matterhorn’. TARS-LH1 showed leafhopper resistance similar to the EMP 507 donor parent and other resistant bean genotypes included in these evaluations. Under very high leafhopper pressure in Haiti in 2017, TARS-LH1 had HB scores of 2.7 and 2.0 in Damien and Cabaret, respectively, while Matterhorn had scores of 8.0 and 7.7 and EMP 507 had scores of 1.3 and 1.7, on a 1 to 9 scale. Empoasca spp. nymph counts (LH) were also below the mean for TARS-LH1 and may indicate an antibiosis component of resistance. TARS-LH1 has an indeterminate, type II plant habit, with a mean lodging score of 2.3 (on a 1 to 5 scale), during the three Michigan trials in 2010 and 2011. TARS-LH1 flowered in 42 d on average in the Michigan trials, and matured in 101 d after planting in the non-stress 2011 PYT trial. It matured in 72 d and 65 d in PR under E. kraemeri pressure in 2011, and under drought stress in 2018, respectively. TARS-LH1 has a mean seed weight of 40.8 g 100 seed-1 in the three trials during two years in Michigan and maintained its seed weight (39 g 100 seed-1) under intermittent drought stress in Puerto Rico. TARS-LH1 has a pinto seed type with near-commercial seed size and quality.

Description:
TARS-LH1 (tested as P08166) was developed from the cross of ‘Matterhorn’//’Matterhorn’/EMP 507 that formed an inbred backcross line (IBL) population that was used in a previous study (Brisco et al., 2014). EMP 507 was developed at CIAT for E. kraemeri resistance through recurrent selection (Cardona et al., 1989; Kornegay and Cardona, 1990), was superior for E. kraemeri resistance and plant vigor in Puerto Rico (data not shown). TARS-LH1 is one of the 75 BC1F4:8 lines.
