Narrative
Hippeastrum x hybridum ‘Caetano’ is a compact bulbous herbaceous perennial. Bulbs are 3.5-4.5 cm diam at first flowering, maturing to 5.0 - 6.0 cm, producing 3-4 offset bulbs annually. Leaves are strap-shaped, green, two to four per bulb, 45-65 cm long, 5-6 cm wide. Scapes are 40-45 cm tall, usually 2 per bulb, each bearing 4 flowers per scape with pedicels only 1 cm long. The flowers are moderately sized funnelform. The perianth is 9-10 cm long, laterally 10-11 cm and dorsoventrally 9-10 cm wide. The six tepals are of medium texture. The outer tepals are 8-9 cm long, and 3-4 cm wide; the inner tepals are 7.5-8 cm long, the inner laterals 3.5-4.5 cm wide; the ventral inner ca. 2.5 cm wide. The tepals are densely striated coral pink on both surfaces, with RHSCC red-purple 57B the closest match. At their base is a star-like white pattern, that fades to silvery white along the tepal keels. The proximal white is bordered by dark reddish-purple. The throat is light green, with a short collar of fimbrae. There is almost no green on abaxial tepal surface. Stamens are 9 to 10 cm long, light pink-purple in the lower half, then white; pollen is yellow. The style is ca. 11 cm and similar in color to the staminal filaments; the white trifid stigma is ca. 7 mm wide. This a complex, sixth generation hybrid that began with primary crosses of H. ambiguum and H. papilio, and H. papilio x ‘Rilona’ with further introgression of H. brasilianum and the complex varieties ‘Wonderland’ and ‘Mt. Blanc’.
