Narrative
Hippeastrum x hybridum ‘Foxfire’ is a moderately tall bulbous herbaceous perennial. Bulbs are 4.5-5.0 cm diam at first flowering, maturing to 7.0 - 8.0 cm, producing 1-2 offset bulbs annually. Leaves are strap-shaped, green two to four per bulb, 25-45 cm long, 4.5-5 cm wide. Scapes are 40-50 cm tall, usually 3 per bulb, each bearing 5-7 flowers per scape with pedicels 1-3 cm long. The flowers are moderately large and open funnelform in shape. The perianth is 11-12 cm long, laterally 14 cm and dorsoventrally 13 cm wide. The six tepals are of medium texture. The outer tepals are 12-13 cm long, and 5.5-6 cm wide, the dorsal outer to 7 cm wide; the inner tepals are 12-12.5 cm long, the inner laterals 5-6 cm wide; the ventral inner ca. 5 cm wide. The tepals are densely striated a reflective orange-red on their adaxial surface, with RHSCC red-purple 57A the closest match, with faint white keels. The inner lateral tepals are marked a deeper red on either side of the keel at their base. The throat is green, with a short ring of fimbrae at the throat. The tepals are similarly colored on their abaxial surfaces, with infusions of green to maroon towards the base. Stamens are 10 to 11.2 cm long, concolorous with the perianth for most of their length, green in the proximal 1.5 cm; pollen is yellow. The style is ca. 13 cm and colored similarly to the staminal filaments; the tri-lobed stigma is ca. 5 mm wide. This a complex, sixth generation hybrid that began with a primary hybrid of H. ambiguum x H. papilio, with successive crosses with H. brasilianum and the cultivars ‘Bouquet’, ‘Mt. Blanc’ and ‘Wonderland’. The final generation from which the selection was made was a cross of two F2 progeny.
