Narrative
Hippeastrum x hybridum ‘Cavalier’ is a tall bulbous herbaceous perennial. Bulbs are 4.0-5.0 cm diam at first flowering, maturing to 7.0 - 8.0 cm, producing 2-3 offset bulbs annually. Leaves are strap-shaped, green, two to four per bulb, 60-70 cm long, 5-5.5 cm wide. Scapes are 50-60 cm tall, usually 3 per bulb, each bearing 4-5 flowers per scape with pedicels 4-6 cm long. The funnel-shaped perianth is 14.5-16 cm long, laterally ca. 13 cm and dorsoventrally 14 cm wide. The six tepals are of medium texture. The outer tepals are 10-12 cm long, and 3.5-4 cm wide at their broadest; the inner tepals are 9.5-11 cm long, the inner laterals 4.5 -5.0 cm wide; the ventral inner ca. 3.5 cm wide. The tepals are striated marginally with orange-red on their adaxial surface, with RHSCC orange-red 33A the closest, with a white central keel. The stsraiation are more diffuse in the proximal region of the tepals and a white underlay can be seen. The throat is green at the base of the tepals, extending up in proximal 1.5 cm of the white keel, with a short ring of fimbrae at the throat. The tepals are similarly colored on their abaxial surfaces, with infusions of green towards the base. Stamens are 11 to 12 cm long, ornage-red distally, fading proximally to white, then green in the proximal 1.5 cm; pollen is yellow. The style is ca. 13 cm and colored similarly to the staminal filaments; the white trifid stigma is ca. 7.0 mm wide. This a complex, sixth generation hybrid that began with a primary hybrid of H. ambiguum x H. papilio, with successive crosses with H. brasilianum and the cultivars ‘Bouquet’, and ‘Wonderland’.
