Narrative
HoCP 11-537 sugarcane is an interspecific hybrid of S. officinarum, S. barberi Jeswiet, S. spontaneum, and S. sinense Roxb. amend. Jeswiet). HoCP 11-537 is moderately susceptible to smut (Sporisorium scitamineum) and leaf scald (Xanthomonas albilineans), and is susceptible to brown rust (Puccinia melanocephala) and ratoon stunt (Leifsonia xyli). Sugarcane mosaic caused by Sorghum mosaic virus and orange rust caused by P. kuehnii have not been observed on HoCP 11-537. HoCP 11-537 had a sugar yield of 12.6, 8.4, and 11.7 Mg ha-1 in plant cane, first and second ratoon respectively from an average of 5 trials with four replications each in Texas. The HoCP 11-537 canopy has bronze colored triangular or deltoid dewlaps. The auricles are present, necrotic and lanceolate shaped. The leaf sheaths are light green transitioning to pink in the sun with age with no silicate hair, and the sheaths adhere tightly to the stalk toward the top of the stalk and are loose at the base. The leaf sheath margin is red at the top of the plant becoming necrotic lower. The rind color on stalks of HoCP 11-537 is yellow green before exposure to sunlight and light green where the internodes are exposed to sunlight. Wax on the leaf sheath is moderate with a greater amount on the stalks that does not rub off easily. The leaf canopy is mostly drooping in shape. The variety has a moderate stalk population with moderate diameter stalks. Internodes are slightly narrower at the top or conoidal shaped with no growth cracks. Bud is slightly rhomboid with no bud groove.
