Narrative
HoCP 09-804 sugarcane is an interspecific hybrid of S. officinarum, S. barberi Jeswiet, S. spontaneum, and S. sinense Roxb. amend. Jeswiet). HoCP 09-804 is mildly susceptible to smut (Sporisorium scitamineum), leaf scald (Xanthomonas albilineans), and ratoon stunt (Leifsonia xyli). HoCP 09-804 is susceptible to brown rust (Puccinia melanocephala), and mosaic caused by Sorghum mosaic virus. It is moderately susceptible to sugarcane borer, Diatraea saccharalis F. HoCP 09-804 had a sugar yield of 10.15, 9.27, 8.37 and 9.53 Mg ha-1 in plant cane, first, second and third ratoon respectively from an average of 12 trials with three replications each in Louisiana. The HoCP 09-804 canopy has bronze colored triangular dewlaps. The auricles are present, about 8 mm every other internode with a small tuft of hair on the opposite side. The leaf sheaths are green with no silicate hair on the adaxial side, and the sheaths tend to loosely adhere to the stalk. The rind color on stalks of HoCP 09-804 is light green before exposure to sunlight and bronze where the internodes are exposed to sunlight. Wax on the leaf sheaths is moderate and rubs off easily with a greater amount on the stalks. The variety has a high stalk population with small diameter stalks. Internodes are slightly narrower in the middle.
