Narrative
Mean stalk height (ground level to the base of top visible dewlap leaf) of CP 09-4758 was 237 cm. Mean internode length (fifth internode from the ground) was 16.9 cm. Stalk diameter was 28.8 mm (second internode), 27.1 mm (fifth internode), 23.3 mm (tenth internode), and 21.1 mm (last hardened internode). CP 09-4758 exhibited a cylindrical shaped internode with 4.26 mm wide growth ring and and 7.83 mm wide root band on the fifth internode. Bud furrows were mostly absent. Buds were moderately raised above the surface of the root band and were narrow ovate with wing broadening towards apex in shape. Average length and width of buds on the fifth internode was 6.81 mm and 5.96 mm , respectively. Mean leaf blade length and width was 147 cm and 4.84 cm, respectively. Leaf sheath pubescence was light towards middle of sheath. CP 09-4758 was considered resistant to brown rust (caused by Puccinia melanocephala H. & P. Sydow), moderately susceptible to orange rust (caused by Puccinia kuehnii E.J. Butler), resistant to smut [caused by Sporisorium scitamineum (Syd.) M. Piepenbring et al.], moderately susceptible to leaf scald (caused by Xanthomonas albilineans Ashby, Dowson), moderately resistant to sugarcane mosaic virus strain E (mosaic), and ratoon stunt (caused by Leifsonia xyli subsp. xyli Evtsuhenko et al.). CP 09-4758 was considered resistant to Sugarcane yellow leaf virus. In addition, CP 09-4758 tested negative for the presence of the Bru1 gene that confers resistance to brown rust.

Description:
The female and male parents of CP 09-4758 are CP 97-2103 and CP 92-1167, respectively. CP 97-2103, an experimental clone in the CP program, was not released as commercial cultivar due to concerns with low sucrose, low yields in the first stubble, and high fiber content. CP 92-1167 had high cane yield but low sucrose in the final selection stage of the CP program and was not considered for release because of its susceptibilities to brown rust and ratoon stunt.
