Narrative
Mean stalk height (ground level to the base of top visible dewlap leaf) of CPCL 09-4160 was 280 cm. Mean internode length (fifth internode from the ground) was 17.1 cm. Stalk diameter was 24.4 mm (second internode), 23.2 mm (fifth internode), 21.1 mm (tenth internode), and 19.4 mm (last hardened internode). CPCL 09-4160 exhibited a cylindrical shaped internode with 3.79 mm wide growth ring and and 7.78 mm wide root band on the fifth internode. Bud furrows were mostly absent. Buds were moderately raised above the surface of the root band and were ovate with secondary wings in shape. Average length and width of buds on the fifth internode was 6.84 mm and 5.62 mm , respectively. Mean leaf blade length and width was 181 cm and 4.30 cm, respectively. Leaf sheath pubescence was very sparse along middle of sheath longitudinally. CPCL 09-4160 was considered resistant to brown rust (caused by Puccinia melanocephala H. & P. Sydow), orange rust (caused by Puccinia kuehnii E.J. Butler), smut [caused by Sporisorium scitamineum (Syd.) M. Piepenbring et al.], leaf scald (caused by Xanthomonas albilineans Ashby, Dowson), sugarcane mosaic virus strain E (mosaic), and moderately susceptible to ratoon stunt (caused by Leifsonia xyli subsp. xyli Evtsuhenko et al.). CPCL 09-4160 was considered resistant to sugarcane yellow leaf virus. In addition, CPCL 09-4160 tested negative for the presence of the Bru1 gene that confers resistance to brown rust.

Description:
TCPCL 09-4160 is the result of a polycross with CP 80-1743 as the female parent . The female parent CP 80-1743 is a vigorous, heavy tillering cultivar that is often used in successive planting situations and grown on 3.8% of sugarcane acreage in Florida during the 2016-17 crop season. The area under cultivation for CP 80-1743 has declined over the years due to susceptibility to orange rust and poor freeze tolerance.
