Narrative
Mean stalk height (ground level to the base of top visible dewlap leaf) of CP 09-4153 was 283 cm. Mean internode length (fifth internode from the ground) was 17.4 cm. Stalk diameter was 24.4 mm (second internode), 23.3 mm (fifth internode), 21.4 mm (tenth internode), and 19.7 mm (last hardened internode). CP 09-4153 exhibited a cylindrical shaped internode with 2.81 mm wide growth ring and and 6.48 mm wide root band on the fifth internode. Bud furrows were mostly absent. Buds were moderately raised above the surface of the root band and were roundish with crawfish type wings in shape. Average length and width of buds on the fifth internode was 6.17 mm and 6.33 mm , respectively. Mean leaf blade length and width was 153 cm and 5.77 cm, respectively. Leaf sheath pubescence was glabrous. CP 09-4153 was considered resistant to brown rust (caused by Puccinia melanocephala H. & P. Sydow), moderately resistant to orange rust (caused by Puccinia kuehnii E.J. Butler), resistant to smut [caused by Sporisorium scitamineum (Syd.) M. Piepenbring et al.], leaf scald (caused by Xanthomonas albilineans Ashby, Dowson), and sugarcane mosaic virus strain E (mosaic), moderately resistant to ratoon stunt (caused by Leifsonia xyli subsp. xyli Evtsuhenko et al.), and resistant to sugarcane yellow leaf virus. In addition, CP 09-4153 tested negative for the presence of the Bru1 gene that confers resistance to brown rust.

Description:
The parentage of CP 09-4153 is CPCL 97-0393 and CPCL 02-8021. The female parent CPCL 97-0393 is an experimental clone in the CP program with superior agronomic performance on sand, but it was not released as a commercial cultivar due to concerns with disease (brown rust, smut, and mosaic) susceptibility. Similarly, CPCL 02-8021, with high sugar content, was not released due to concerns with low cane yield.
