Narrative
Chickpea (Cicer arietinum L.) leaf miner [Liriomyza cicerina Rond. (Diptera: Agromyzidae)] is aone of the important insect pests of chickpea causing substantial yield losses if it is not adequately controlled. Host plant resistance to leaf miner is the best control options in sustainable farming. An accession (AWC 612) of C. reticulatum Ladiz., crossable with cultivated chickpea, was irradiated with 200, 300 and 400 Gy gamma rays to increase variation. AWC 612M with a multipinnate leaf type was selected in the M3. The mutant was evaluated for resistance against leaf miner under natural epidemic conditions in the field for 10 years from 2007 to 2016. AWC 612M was free from damage, while the susceptible chickpea ILC 3397 had many mines in greater than 91% of leaflets and leaf drop greater than 31%. Therefore, AWC 612M chickpea derived from C. reticulatum, compatible with the cultivated chickpea, represents a new source of resistance to leaf miner in breeding programs.

Description:
AWC 612M, a mutant germplasm was selected as a morphologically diverse mutant of Cicer reticulatum (AWC 612). Gamma radiation was induced in order to create variation in AWC 612. AWC 612M was selected in M3 for multipinnate leaves. AWC612M was screened for resistance to leaf miner for ten years and it was found as free from leaf miner damage.
