Narrative
The mean stalk height (ground level to top visible dewlap, dewlaps form the hinge of the blade joint in sugarcane) of 10 stalks of CP 10-1208 was 327 cm. The mean internode length of 10 CP 10-1208 stalks at the fifth internode from the ground was 19.6 cm. Stalk diameter was measured at the middle of the second (29.7 mm), fifth (28.2 mm), and tenth (24.0 mm) internodes from the ground as well as at the middle of the hardened internode closest to the top visible dewlap (23.0 mm). CP 10-1208 exhibited a slightly conoidal shaped internode and a growth ring with a mean width of 2.0 mm at the fifth internode from the ground. The root band of CP 10-1208 was 7.9 mm wide. Bud furrows were absent. The buds of CP 10-1208 were yellow (5Y8/4). Buds of CP 10-1208 were not raised above the surface of the root band and had shapes described as ovate bud at the fifth internode from the ground. The bud length and width means of the fifth bud from the bottom from five stalks of CP 10-1208 were 7.6 and 6.3 mm, respectively. Leaf sheath pubescence was glabrous to very light and located lower/center portion for CP 10-1208. The buds of CP 10-1208 had light-moderate pubescence with long hair around the apex. CP 10-1208 is resistant to brown rust (caused by Puccinia melanocephala H. & P. Sydow), smut (caused by Ustilago scitaminea (Sydow & P. Sydow), leaf scald (caused by Xanthomonas albilineans Ashby, Dowson), and Sugarcane mosaic virus strain E (mosaic), moderately resistance to sugarcane yellow leaf virus, but moderately susceptible to orange rust (caused by Puccinia kuehnii E.J. Butler) and ratoon stunt (caused by Leifsonia xyli subsp. xyli Evtsuhenko et al.). In addition, CP 10-1208 tested positive for the presence of the Bru1 gene which confers resistance to brown rust.

Description:
Parents of CP 10-1208 were the two CP sugarcane breeding lines CP 01-2390 (female) and TCP 98-4454 (male). Grandparents on the female side were CP 95-2318 and CP 94-1528, and on the male side were CP 81-1405 and CP 71-1240. Known great grandparents on the female side were CP 87-1628, US 90-1090, and CP 72-2086 and on male side were CP 68-1067, CP 74-2013, CP 62-0374, and CP 56-0059. Of the grandparents and great grandparents, there were four successful commercial sugarcane cultivars (CP 72-2086, CP 68-1067, CP 62-0374, and CP 56-0059) in Florida, and a wide cross US 90-1090.
