Narrative
‘HoCP 04-838’ sugarcane is an interspecific hybrid of S. officinarum, S. barberi Jeswiet, S. spontaneum, and S. sinense Roxb. amend. Jeswiet). Mature stalk cold tolerance showed good cold tolerance and had only minor post freeze deterioration and loss of juice TRS after 4 weeks after a freeze. HoCP 04-838 is resistant to smut (Sporisorium scitamineum), mosaic caused by Sorghum mosaic virus, brown rust (Puccinia melanocephala) and ratoon stunt (Leifsonia xyli). HoCP 04-838 is moderately resistant to leaf scald (Xanthomonas albilineans) and is susceptible to sugarcane yellow leaf virus. It is resistant to sugarcane borer, Diatraea saccharalis F. HoCP 04-838 had a sugar yield of 10.83 Mg ha-1, a cane yield of 105.5 Mg ha-1, a sucrose content of 120 g kg-1, and a fiber of 137 g kg-1 from the average of 9 trials with three replications each harvested for four years in Louisiana. The canopy of HoCP 04-838 is similar to it parents HoCP 85-845 and LCP 85-384, except that the leaf blade bends near the middle, rather than toward the tip. Similar to LCP 85-384, the dewlaps of HoCP 04-838 are triangular with an olive-green color that tends to turn brown with age and exposure to sunlight; auricles are present, about 1 cm in length, and auricle hair is prominent. Leaf sheath edges are straw colored. Unlike LCP 85-384, leaf sheaths tend to remain green when exposed to the sun, and are smooth (no silicate hair) on the back side. Sheaths tend to adhere to the stalk less tightly than either of its parents. The rind color on stalks of HoCP 04-838 is green to yellowish-green when the stalks are unexposed, taking on a purple tint when exposed to sunlight. Wax on the stalks and sheaths of HoCP 04-838 is present but less pronounced than on the stalks and leaves of LCP 85-384 or HoCP 96-540. Stalk diameter is similar to that of LCP 85-834. Internodes on the stalk are slightly spool shaped.
